China's visa-free scheme — and why Tibet still needs a permit

From 17 February 2026, British citizens can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. Brilliant news — but it doesn't get you into Tibet. Here's the lowdown.

The key thing to remember: the UK visa-free scheme is your key to the front door of China. But Tibet is a whole different ball game — think of the Tibet Travel Permit as the specific room key for the Tibet Autonomous Region. You can't get into Tibet without it, no matter how you enter China. And you absolutely cannot apply for it yourself.

UK citizens can now enter China visa-free

Since 17 February 2026, holders of ordinary UK passports can enter China visa-free and stay for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit. The policy runs until at least 31 December 2026. No more queuing at the visa centre in London — smashing.

UK Visa-Free

UK added to China's visa-free list

From 17 February 2026, ordinary UK passport holders can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. This is a major change for British travellers — but it doesn't remove the Tibet Travel Permit requirement. Tibet remains a specially administered region with its own entry rules.

The original permit is now required to board trains

From 13 March 2026, all foreign travellers entering Tibet — whether by train or by plane — must present the original Tibet Travel Permit. Previously a photocopy was accepted for train entry from most cities. The change is understood to support security checks ahead of a forecast surge in foreign arrivals in 2026.

Overland route between Tibet and Nepal temporarily closed

On 26 August 2026, a landslide in Nepal caused the overland tourist route between China's Tibet and Nepal to be temporarily closed. Both the Gyirong (Kyirong) and Zhangmu ports are currently shut. Do check back on our website for further updates.

The Basics

What exactly is the Tibet Travel Permit?

The Tibet Travel Permit (入藏函) — commonly called the Tibet Visa — is an official document issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau that authorises a foreign visitor to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region and to travel within it.

It isn't a visa in the immigration sense. Your China visa — or the visa-free entry you get as a UK citizen — gets you into China; the Tibet Travel Permit gets you into Tibet. You'll be asked to show it when you check in for a flight or train to Lhasa, and your guide will carry the original throughout your stay for hotel registration and roadside checkpoint inspections.

The permit lists every destination and attraction included in your itinerary. Once it has been issued it can't be extended or amended, which is why your route has to be finalised before we submit the application.

  • Applied for by: a licensed travel agency registered in Tibet — never by the traveller directly

Important: no agency can legally sell you a standalone permit. The permit must be tied to a booked tour with a guide and vehicle. Anyone offering a "permit only" service isn't operating within the rules.

Tibet is part of China, so you'll need a valid passport to enter the country. As a UK citizen, you can now enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. If you're staying longer than 30 days, you'll need to apply for a Chinese visa at a CVASC in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

If you enter Tibet from Nepal you'll need a Tibet Group Visa issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Your agency supplies the invitation letter from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

How to get your Tibet Travel Permit

Six straightforward steps. You handle the documents; we handle every conversation with the Tibet Tourism Bureau.

  1. Send us your dates, route and entry point

    Tell us when you want to travel, how you plan to enter Tibet — flight, train or overland from Nepal — and which places you'd like to see. This is what determines which permits you need.

    We'll prepare a day-by-day itinerary and a full package quote, then hold your dates with a deposit paid by PayPal, Wise or bank transfer. Your route must be final before the permit is submitted, because it can't be changed afterwards.

    Send clear colour scans of your passport photo page. If you're travelling under the visa-free scheme and your Tibet itinerary is under 15 days, passport photos are all you need — no Chinese visa required. If you hold a Chinese visa or plan to stay longer than 30 days, include that too. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

How much does a Tibet Travel Permit cost?

There's no single fixed price, because the total combines a government fee with a service fee that's bundled into your tour package. Here's what to budget for in pounds.

Tibet isn't uniformly open. Some areas need an extra permit; a few remain closed to foreign travellers entirely.

The questions our British travellers ask most often, answered plainly.

Do British citizens need a visa to visit China now?

No. Since 17 February 2026, holders of ordinary UK passports can enter China visa-free and stay for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchange and transit. The policy runs until at least 31 December 2026.

However, this visa waiver does not apply to Tibet. You still need a Tibet Travel Permit, and that's a separate document entirely.

Can I just hop on a flight to Tibet with my UK passport?

No. While the UK visa-free scheme lets you enter China, Tibet is a separate matter entirely. Every foreign passport holder — including British citizens — must hold a valid Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Permits are issued only through a licensed Tibetan travel agency, and independent applications aren't accepted. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's best you know before you book those flights.

If the UK visa-free policy covers China, do I still need a Chinese visa for Tibet?

Not necessarily. If your Tibet itinerary is under 15 days and you're travelling under the visa-free scheme, you only need passport photos for the permit application — no Chinese visa required.

If you plan to stay in China longer than 30 days, you'll need to apply for a Chinese visa at a CVASC in London, Manchester or Edinburgh before you travel.

How long does a Tibet Travel Permit take to process for UK travellers?

Processing normally takes 8–10 working days once we have complete documents in hand. We recommend starting the application 15–20 working days before departure.

During busy periods — July, August and the first week of October — allow extra time. For Mount Kailash and Ngari, allow 15 to 30 days.

How much does a Tibet Travel Permit cost for UK travellers?

Permits are never sold separately, because doing so is illegal in China. The total cost combines the government fee charged by the Tibet Tourism Bureau with the travel agency service fee, and it's included in your overall tour package quote.

The Alien's Travel Permit for restricted areas costs a separate ¥50, around £5.50 per person, applied for after you arrive in Lhasa. A bare-bones 4-day Lhasa-only group tour typically starts from around £300–400 per person.

Can I travel to Tibet independently as a British citizen?

No. Foreign passport holders, including UK citizens, cannot travel independently in Tibet. You must book through a licensed Tibetan travel agency and be accompanied by a guide throughout your stay. The agency also arranges your vehicle and itinerary.

Is the original Tibet Travel Permit required to board a train?

Yes. Since 13 March 2026, all foreign travellers entering Tibet by train or by plane must present the original copy of their Tibet Travel Permit.

In previous years a photocopy was sufficient for train entry from most cities, so this is a significant change. Make sure your delivery arrangement gets you the original before you board.

What is the difference between the Tibet Travel Permit and the Alien's Travel Permit?

The Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) is the entry permit that allows you to enter the Tibet Autonomous Region. It's applied for before you travel.

The Alien's Travel Permit (ATP) is an additional document issued by the Public Security Bureau in Lhasa that allows you to visit restricted or unopened areas — Everest Base Camp, Shigatse, Gyantse, Tsetang, Nyingchi, Ngari and beyond. Your guide applies for it on your behalf after you arrive.

Which areas of Tibet require extra permits?

Most of Tibet is reachable with the right permits, but a few areas remain closed and the following require an Alien's Travel Permit — and in some cases a military permit:

  • Shigatse region, including Everest Base Camp and Rongbuk
  • Gyantse and Tsetang
  • The Ngari region, including Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar and the Guge Kingdom
  • The Nyingchi region
  • The Chamdo region

Foreign travellers can also enter Tibet overland from Sichuan and Yunnan provinces by self-driving, but this must be done as part of an organised group, with a support vehicle, driver and guide arranged by a licensed travel agency. Please contact us for details.

When is the best time to visit Tibet from the UK?

April to October is the main travel season, with warmer days, clearer skies and full access to Everest Base Camp and western Tibet.

November to March is colder with far fewer tourists, but some regions are inaccessible. Direct flights from London to mainland China take around 10–12 hours, with connections to Lhasa from Chengdu, Beijing or Xian. Do factor in a day or two to acclimatise in a gateway city before flying up to Lhasa.
